Minivans are synonymous with families these days. Some dads are worried about getting a minivan because they think it will make them look less cool…this is a legitimate concern. There is no way you can look cool in a minivan, but as a dad, trading in your external “cool” status for the honor of driving around your crew of little ones is something that you have to grow to accept. BUT WAIT! What if there was a way for you to maintain your cool, keep your kids safe and make it super-convenient and stylish? See where I’m going with this?
When our friends at Ford asked us to take a break from our minivan for a week to check out the all new 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum Edition, we “hit the gas” on the opportunity! There are lots of great features on this vehicle, many of which are perfect for busy families like ours. In addition to the level of quality you come to expect with Ford’s Explorer model, you also feel a sense of cutting-edge technology and style.
The premium sound system in the car from Sony® really lets you groove down the road to your favorite tunes. It’s like a concert in your car! This feature is unique to the platinum edition and includes 500 watts of bass-booming sound, 12 speakers including a subwoofer, and a new 14-channel amp. The Clear Phase® audio and Live Acoustics™ functionality to helps reduce distortion and enhance sound presence for a crisp and clean listening experience.
If you are one of those dads that I mentioned earlier, this is the answer to your cool status. The dual panel moonroof offers great views in the first and second row of the vehicle and comes standard on the Platinum model. As you can see from our video, the kids really loved the 20” wheels. I don’t know of any minivans on the market that come standard with bright machined face wheels with dark tarnish-painted pockets on them, do you? There’s a reason for that! You will be the envy of the carpool line in this car, I promise.
The most convenient feature for us on this rock star car was the wave of your foot rear-opening door and the push-button automatic seat folding. These features are life savers when you have your hands full with busy kids, grocery bags or baby strollers. The buttons are perfect for little fingers to push when you need a little extra help. My seven-year-old was easily able to fold the seats so she and her brother could crawl into the back seat. With Mommy at work, I took all three kids to the grocery store and it was a simple trip with this car. Everyone had enough room, and the groceries and stroller fit too!
We were definitely surprised at how well this vehicle worked for our large family. I think Ford has definitely come up with a viable alternative to the minivan for busy parents. Although there are no sliding doors to this SUV (or any true SUV for that matter), we think the combination of style, push-button features, and comfort, really make this vehicle stand out among the rest in its class. Thanks to the good folks at Ford for letting us try it out!
*Ford Motor Company let us borrow a 2016 Ford Explorer for a week so we could try it out! All opinions are our own! For more details on what this means, please visit our disclosure page.
